Why Build “GREEN”? – “To Build Green or Not?”; is no longer the question. What has moved our collective dialogue on in almost every corner of the industrialized world is that the question of “should we go green” has been answered and the answer is a resounding YES.
Today the question on almost everyone's’ mind is; How should we go “green” or more correctly; “How do we adopt a sustainable business ethic and build green?”
The reasons for adopting a sustainable lifestyle, culture, business practice, and a green building standard still vary when the question is asked, but it is clear that the idea has finally taken hold, there will be no stopping it now. However, as Kermit, the famous frog philosopher, once lamented that; “It’s not easy to be green.”
It may not be easy to be green in all aspects of life and commerce but it is getting easier every day. The Construction Industry is one sector of our economy where new products and emerging guidelines in the form of building standards are rapidly emerging to assist architects, builders, and property owners in making informed decisions on how and why to go “green”.
The reasons to go green are both philosophical and material in nature. They can be based in simple economics, the desire, and need to be good stewards over our diminishing resources, or to save the Earth from global-climate change. What is emerging in our collective consciousness is a realization that a sustainable strategy for living accomplishes the goals of both the economic and the global-warming aspects of the debate.
Sustainability means use only what can be replaced to ensure the availability and viability of a particular resource or product.
GBC&C embraces the concept of sustainable building practices, including the efficient use of materials and technology to ensure a quality of life that is rooted in sound economics and a desire to protect our environment and our planet now and for future generations.
